Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Vampire Academy and Bloodline series returns with the second installment in her acclaimed Age of X series. Religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen—the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him—have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect—special humans marked by the divine—are turning against one another in bloody fashion.Their mission takes a new twist when they are assigned to a diplomatic delegation headed by Lucian Darling, Justin’s old friend and rival, going into Arcadia, the RUNA’s dangerous neighboring country. Here, in a society where women are commodities and religion is intertwined with government, Justin discovers powerful forces at work, even as he struggles to come to terms with his own reluctantly acquired deity.Meanwhile, Mae—grudgingly posing as Justin’s concubine—has a secret mission of her own: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter’s connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission—and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.

I love this series by Richelle Mead. It's full of intrigue with characters that really pull you in, from the devil-may-care but compassionate Justin, fierce but vulnerable Mae and innocent but gaining confidence Tessa. Others have commented that this series is too complex, however that is one of the things I like most about these books. In a similar cadence and depth to Mead's Bloodlines series, the Age of X series gradually introduces a future world with details of a mysterious plot to take over simmering just beneath the surface. It's these details that slowly combine throughout the series that will compel you to keep reading (and re-reading!), trying to figure out exactly what is happening and what will take place next. It's not exactly suspenseful, at least not most of the time, and I can understand why some people feel that the book is a bit slow, but I believe that the steady rhythm of he storyline makes for a much stronger plot and more compelling story. The relationship between Justin and Mae is not a flippant teen romance but one that is more complex and with greater depth. As with most people, neither character is solely what you see on the surface. Their pasts have defined their outlook on life and relationships, and I can't wait to see where this story leads as the two struggle with their warring emotions about each other and what they believe. Writing this review makes me want to read the series again for a third time! I can't wait for the next installment of this series. Seriously, I go back and forth on which book I want next from Mead - the next in this series or Bloodlines. Both are so fantastic!
